FORMULA 600 CHALLENGE SERIES: HOT RACING AT ROEBLING ROAD RACEWAY
The high heat index, a rainy weather forecast and the July 4th holiday kept many of our regular series drivers from running this event even though we ran in the first race group when it is cooler. Four drivers did survive the high heat and humidity and put on a good race on both days. Our perennial leader, Clint McMahan, again won the pole on Saturday with Jeff DeLong in 2nd, 3rd was Craig Laprade (first event since last Fall) and, 4th, series newcomer, Ryan Mayfield in the yellow “Banana Boat”. In Saturday’s race, Clint became enmeshed in the group of three – Jeff DeLong, Craig Laprade (in his new car bought from Eric McRee) and newcomer, Ryan Mayfield. Every lap had a different leader until it settled down in the last 4 laps. As Clint crossed the finish line by not much of a margin he was followed by Jeff DeLong, Ryan Mayfield and Craig Laprade.
Qualifying for Sunday’s race was determined by your best lap time from the previous three track sessions – Saturday qualifying, Saturday race and Sunday qualifying. Clint McMahan was on the pole – no surprise – but Jeff Delong, in 2nd, now had both Craig Laprade and Ryan Mayfield a whole lot closer to his qualifying time as both steadily improved over each track session. For the Sunday race, Clint had both Craig and Ryan mixing it up with him lap after lap. Unfortunately, Jeff had a mechanical issue which left him on the side of the track. Clint finished in front of Ryan with Craig a short ways back.
For the weekend, the points are as follows:
1. Clint McMahan 24
2. Ryan Mayfield 22
3. Jeff Delong 20
4. Craig Laprade 18
The series points standings are now as follows:
1. Clint McMahan 48
2. Aaron Ellis 38
3. Jeff DeLong 38
4. Eric McRee 22
5. Ryan Mayfield 22
6. Sven DeVries 20
7. Craig Laprade 18
8. Zak Morvik 16

The Formula 600 Challenge Series was developed to help promote an affordable open wheel formula car class to showcase talent without large financial race budgets. There are no paid staffers and one hundred percent of all sponsorship monies and product goes directly to the drivers in our series mostly as a tow fund payment for each race. The Formula 600 open wheel cars use a 600cc motorcycle engine and a six speed sequential transmission revving up to 15,000 rpm with speeds in excess of 140 mph. The sound of these cars is likened to F1 cars.
