FORMULA 600 CHALLENGE: 2016 FINALE RESULTS AT ROAD ATLANTA

The whole weekend had perfect fall weather and the lap times reflected this. With each track session and the race the lap times steadily improved for most of the drivers. With the series points leader, Aaron Ellis, not able to make this finale due to family and work commitments this left the door open for the 2nd place driver, Carl Maier, to win the series with a 2nd place or better finish. In qualifying, Clint McMahan, in his only appearance this year, got close to the track record of 1:30.7 with a time of 1:32.5, not bad after being out of a F600 car for the whole season. In a very nice surprise, newcomer Eric McRee, in only his 4th race in his car, qualified 2nd with a respectable 1:37.5. Just 1.1 seconds behind was John Pickle in 3rd followed very closely (.07 second) by Carl Maier in 4th and Mo Makki in 5th. Not qualifying, Sven deVries had motor trouble and Jeff DeLong had a shunt.
For the race, both Sven and Jeff were able to start from the back. Sven deVries had borrowed Zak Morvik’s car (Zak had hurt his back and was unable to attend.) and Jeff was able to repair the damage to his car. With Clint on the pole by a good margin it looked like this was going to be his race, BUT NO, bad luck struck Clint as he had to retire on the starting lap with no oil pressure; he had run this motor for just a little bit too long. With Clint retired, newcomer Eric McRee stepped right up and charged to the front in a very impressive manner, clicking off his best time of the event with a 1:35.2 enroute to a convincing win for this novice. Improving his time to a 1:37.1, Carl Maier finished 2nd, followed by Mo Makki in 3rd, Jeff DeLong in 4th, Sven deVries in 5th, Clint McMahan in 6th and John Pickle in 7th.

Race points are as follows:

1. Eric McRee 24
2. Carl Maier 22
3. Mo Makki 20
4. Jeff Delong 18
5. Sven deVries 16
6. Clint McMahan 14
7. John Pickle 12

All this settled the ties in the points series coming into this finale. The final series points standings will be in the 2016 season wrap-up in the next press release.

The Formula 600 Challenge Series was developed to help promote an affordable open wheel formula car class to showcase talent without large financial race budgets. The Formula 600 open wheel cars use a 600cc motorcycle engine and a 6 speed sequential transmission revving up to 15,000 rpm with speeds in excess of 140 mph. The sound of this drive train is likened to a F1 car.
