F600 Challenge: Back at VIR

Postby Jim Murphy » Tue Apr 18, 2017 10:49 am

VIR is a great track that is 3.27 miles long with many different corners and straights. The SCCA Hoosier Super Tour totally packed all the available paddock spaces with even several drivers in the back straight paddock – a long way from the main paddock. Beautiful weather for most of the weekend saw that the qualifying for the first race would be strong and it was. Perennial front runner, Clint McMahan, qualified on the pole with a 1:59.149 followed by Calvin Stewart, 2015 Daytona Runoffs Winner, first time at VIR, with a 2:02.617 and third, Sven DeVries with a 2:02.864 and then followed by Jeff Delong, Zak Morvik and Mo Makki. The Saturday race was one of attrition as Jeff Delong won with Clint McMahan in 2nd with a bad fuel pump, Mo Makki in 3rd still learning the track, Sven DeVries in 4th with a small electrical fire and Zak Morvik in 5th with a bad master switch.

Jeff, Zak and Mo improved their times for the Sunday race and with Calvin racing on Sunday, there was hope that this would be a fun race to watch. Alas, it was not to be as almost every green lap a car, mostly FF’s, was involved with some incident and off course excursion, one of which in the first lap involved Calvin who was able to continue but too far behind to catch up. Finally the race was checkered under a full course yellow when time expired. This time, there was no attrition as Clint, once again, won ( https://www.scca.com/videos/2031764 ) with Sven in 2nd, Jeff in 3rd, Zak in 4th, Mo in 5th and Calvin in 6th. Both Jeff and Zak significantly improved their lap times over the course of the weekend.

Weekend points are as follows:

1. Clint McMahan 24
2. Jeff Delong 22
3. Sven DeVries 20
4. Mo Makki 18
5. Zak Morvik 16
6. Calvin Stewart 14

The Series points standings are as follows:

1. Clint McMahan 46
2. Sven DeVries 44
3. Jeff Delong 42
4. Zak Morvik 36
5. Carl Maier 20
6. Mo Makki 18
7. Calvin Stewart 14

The Formula 600 Challenge series was developed to help promote an affordable open wheel formula car series to showcase talent without large financial race budgets. The Formula 600 open wheel cars use a 600cc motorcycle engine and a 6 speed sequential transmission revving up to 15,000 rpm with speeds in excess of 140 mph. The sound of this drive train is likened to a F1 car.
