Postby Jim Murphy » Thu May 18, 2017 4:10 pm

Formula 600 Challenge Series returned to Heartland Park Topeka for the first time since 2013. The track has just re-opened with brand new repaving which proved to be challenging in the first track sessions until some rubber was built up. Thus, everyone’s lap times were noticeably slower than before. Saturday’s qualifying saw a new name on the pole – Sven DeVries eked out over perennial favorite, Clint McMahan, by about 7 tenths – 1:44.053 to 1:44.764. Aaron Ellis returned to the Series in 3rd followed by Jeff Delong and Carl Maier. For the race, Clint McMahan lowered his lap time to 1:43.052 and again took the lead followed by Aaron Ellis, improving his time by about 4 seconds, then Sven DeVries, Carl Maier and Jeff Delong.

Sunday’s qualifying saw Clint on the pole with Sven in 2nd, Aaron in 3rd followed by Jeff and Carl. For the race, Clint won, lowering his time to a 1:42.428, with Sven in 2nd with a new track record of 1:42.158 set while trying to catch Clint in the later part of the race, then Aaron who ran out of tires and could not keep up, followed by Carl and Jeff. Here is Sven deVries’ onboard video of the race -

After three rounds, the series points standings are as follows:

1. Clint McMahan 70
2. Sven DeVries 66
3. Jeff Delong 58
4. Carl Maier 38
5. Zak Morvik 36
6. Aaron Ellis 20

The Formula 600 Challenge series was developed to help promote an affordable open wheel formula car series to showcase talent without large financial race budgets. The Formula 600 open wheel cars use a 600cc motorcycle engine and a 6-speed sequential transmission revving up to 15,000 rpm with speeds in excess of 140 mph. The sound of this drive train is likened to a F1 car.
